Five things to check before choosing a craft mattress

The softly raised surface and careful finishing are part of a craft mattress’s appeal. When choosing one for long-term use, look beyond appearance to its combination of materials and how it actually feels. Here are five useful points to consider.

1. Separate firmness from the feeling of support
A soft surface can sit over a structure designed to support the body. Rather than deciding on firmness alone, try your usual sleeping position and check for pressure around the shoulders and hips or uncomfortable sinking. If possible, try both back and side positions and compare how easy it is to turn over.

2. Look at how and where materials are used
Wool, cotton, latex and foam feel different depending on their combination and position. Beyond a claim that natural materials are included, distinguish the cover, fillings, comfort layers and support unit to understand the construction.

3. Ask what the handwork involves
The word “craft” alone does not explain the process. Ask which steps, such as sewing or tufting, are carried out and how they relate to the mattress’s structure. Surface contours alone do not establish the internal specifications or quality.

4. Measure the mattress and bed together
Check mattress thickness and platform height as well as width and length. Consider the sitting height, how much headboard remains visible and suitable sheet sizes. Check entrances and lifts too, so delivery access is understood in advance.

5. Check care and support after purchase
Whether both sides can be used, how to rotate the mattress and how to care for it vary by product. Confirm warranty coverage and whom to contact. Handmade production alone does not guarantee durability or particular benefits.

At AFL, you can compare materials and construction and discuss your preferred comfort and specifications. Whether you are choosing a single mattress, stocking a shop or developing a branded product, tell us your intended use, quantity and target specifications.
